My background

Joey Lamar has always been a public servant and enjoyed giving back to the community. Every job he has worked has been about helping others.

Joey attended Clark Atlanta University where he obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Accounting.  He later graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in Dec. 2013 with a second master’s degree in Sports Journalism.

Currently, Joey works as a counselor at the Florida Abuse Hotline. He helps children and vulnerable adults of harm and maltreatment receive the services they need. His first supervisor said, “Joey is going to save the world.” She said this because Joey believes in helping everyone.

In the six years prior, Joey highlighted the most important sports stories in every community he served. He worked in Albany, Ga.; Helena, Mont.; Bismarck, N.D.; and Tallahassee, Fla. Joey believed in covering stories of student athletes who worked hard, regardless of their sport. Some of the stories he enjoyed producing most were from Olympic sports (gymnastics, swimming and diving, volleyball and softball).

When Joey moved to Tallahassee to work for WCTV, he knew he was home. He had never been more welcomed by a community before. He lived one of his dreams of covering two premier college athletics programs in Florida State University and Florida A&M University, while also having the chance to cover some of the nation's rising stars at the high school level.

Joey is believed to be the first African American sports director in North Dakota history. Joey thoroughly enjoyed his three years  in the Peace Garden State. Before joining KXMB, Joey was the weekday sports anchor for WFXL in Albany, GA. Aside from anchoring five days a week, he also managed the department — his first job out of college. After leaving Albany, he spent time as anchor/reporter for KFBB servicing the Great Falls and Helena area.

Before starting his career in sports journalism, he interned at USA Track & Field, WLFI-News 18, West Lafayette and WRTV, Indianapolis.
